    Sizes 1 to 2 years

    REQUIREMENTS

    YARN: 1-ounce of 3-ply fingering or 3-ply sock yarn.

    NEEDLES: 1-pair of #1 single-pointed. Two Stitch Holders.

    GAUGE: 8 ½ sts to an inch.

    Starting at the cuff: Cast on 40 sts and work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 1 ½ inches. On the last row decrease to 36 sts. Now work in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 3 ½ inches in all.

    HEEL: Knit 10 sts, leave on the needle; place the next 16 sts for instep onto a st holder; the remaining 10 sts onto a 2nd st holder. Working on the 10 sts in stockinette stitch always slipping the first st on a purl row, make 14 rows, ending with a purl row.

    SHAPING OF HEEL:

    K 2, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 3, turn;

    k 3, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 4, turn;

    k 4, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 5, turn;

    k 5, sl 1, k 1, psso, no k 1, (6 sts).

    With the same needle pick up and knit 8 sts along side of heel; knit the 16 sts off st holder onto needle; place these 30 sts onto a free st holder; knit the 10 sts from st holder. Work on these sts for 15 rows, (always slipping the first st on a knit row), ending with a knit row.

    SHAPING 2ND HALF OF HEEL:

    P 2, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 3, turn;

    p 3, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 4, turn;

    p 4, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; sl 1, k 5, turn;

    p 5, p 2 tog, no p 1, (6 sts).

    With .the same needle, pick up end purl 8 sts along side of heel; place a marker on the needle; purl 16 sts of the instep; place a marker; purl remaining 14 sts.

    DECREASES: lst dec: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker; k 16 sts: slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1. psso, knit to end of row. 2nd row: Purl across row, keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until 36 sts remain on the needle. Drop off the markers. Work even in stockinette stitch until the sock measures 4 inches from the back of heel, ending with a knit row. Purl 9 sts; place a marker on needle; purl 18 sts; place a marker on needle; purl 9 sts.

    TOE DECREASES: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker, k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to within 3 sts of 2nd marker; k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. 2nd row: Purl across row, keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until 12 sts remain in all, ending with a knit row. Purl across next row; purling 2 sts together across. (6 sts). Break yarn leaving 10 inches. Thread a darning needle and draw thru all sts, fasten tight on the wrong side. Sew sole and back seams. Make the other sock the same way.

    REQUIREMENTS

    YARN: 4-ounces of any sock yarn.

    NEEDLES: 1-pair single-pointed size #2.

    Two Stitch Holders.

    GAUGE: 8 sts to an inch.

    Starting at the cuff: Cast on 68 sts and work in ribbing of k 1. p 1. for 4 inches. Now work in stockinette stitch, (k 1 row, p 1 row) until the piece measures 11 ½ inches in all, ending with a purl row.

    HEEL: Knit 17 sts; leave on the needle; place the next 34 sts (instep) onto a stitch holder and the last 17 sts onto a 2nd st holder. Working on the first 17 sts, work in stockinette st, always slipping the first st on a purl row, work 26 rows, ending with a purl row.

    SHAPING OF THE HEEL:

    K 2, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 3, turn;

    K 3, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 4, turn;

    K 4, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 5, turn;

    K 5, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1, p 6, turn;

    K 6, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, turn; sl 1. p 7, turn;

    DECREASES: Knit 22 sts, k 2 tog; place marker on the needle; knit 34 sts; place a marker on needle; sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. NEXT ROW: Purl across row, keeping markers in place. 2nd dec: Knit to within 2 sts of first marker, k 2 tog; slip marker; k 34 sts; slip marker; sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. NEXT ROW: Purl across, keeping markers in place. Repeat these last 2 rows until 68 sts remain on the needle. Drop markers off entirely. Work in stockinette stitch until the sock measures (from the back of the heel) 2-inches shorter than the length you need. (8-ins. size 10) (8 ½-ins. size 10 ½) (9-ins. size 11) (9 ½-ins, size 11 ½) (10-ins. size 12), ending with a knit row. NEXT PURL ROW: Purl 17 sts; place a marker on the needle; p 34 sts; place a marker on needle; p 17 sts.

    TOE DECREASES: 1st dec: Knit to within 3 sts of first marker; k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker; k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to within 3 sts of 2nd marker, k 2 tog, k 1; slip marker, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, knit to end of row. 2nd row: Purl across, keeping markers in place.
