    IMPORTANT DRINKING WATER QUALITY UPDATE
    REGARDING TOTAL TRIHALOMETHANES (TTHM) VIOLATION

    Dear Residents,

We are writing to keep you updated about steps being taken regarding your water and a recent violation of a water quality standard.

Below is a summary of the current water quality status within the City of Pembroke Pines:

    • This is NOT an acute health risk. Water users should follow this notice as well as the first notice issued by the City of Pembroke Pines on February 9th, 2017 and any future public notices pertaining to this subject. Please disregard the letter sent on February 23rd, 2017.
    • Trihalomethane (TTHM) levels are currently not meeting the State and Federal Primary Standard (based on a running annual average). Since this standard is based on an average, we anticipate that there will be a need to issue additional public notices as required by law until the matter is resolved.

    What is being done?

The City is taking extra measures to address the issue. As recommended by the Florida Department of Health in Broward County (FDOH-BC), the City has begun sampling for TTHM at the treatment plant to help understand the situation better. We continue to test the water quality throughout our distribution area. Improvements at the water treatment plant are underway. The quality of your water remains a top concern for the City. We are working with FDOH-BC to make sure that your water is of the highest quality.

    What should I do?

    • There is nothing you need to do. You do NOT need to boil your water or take other corrective actions. If a situation arises where there is an acute risk to health, you will be notified within 24 hours.
    • If you have a severely compromised immune system, have an infant, are pregnant, or elderly, you may be at increased risk and should seek advice from your health care providers about drinking this water.

    What does this mean?

This is NOT an emergency. If it had been an emergency, you would have been notified within 24 hours.

TTHM are volatile organic chemicals that form when disinfectants react with natural organic matter in the water.

People who drink water containing TTHM in excess of the MCL over many years may experience problems with their liver, kidneys, or central nervous system, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.

If you have concerns about this water quality standard, you may want to contact the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline 800-426-4791 or visit this CDC website: https://www.cdc.gov/safewater/chlorination-byproducts.html

Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.

For more information, please contact Paul Thompson at 954-518-9090, or pthompson@ppines.com or 8300 S. Palm Drive, Pembroke Pines, FL 33025.

This notice is being sent to you by the City of Pembroke Pines, State Water System ID#: 4061083
    Date distributed: April 5, 2017.

    Regards,

    City of Pembroke Pines
