Hot Dish Mit
This free pattern originally published in A Bookful of Crochet, Book No. 52.
Materials: J. & P. Coats Crochet Cord, 2 balls of color 68 Skipper Blue, and 1 ball each of color 9 Yellow and 126 Spanish Red. Milward’s steel crochet hook No. 4.
Draw a diagram for mit by tracing the outline of your hand on a sheet of paper — allowing for mit to fit loosely.
The mit is worked diagonally — begin outside of wrist on diagram. With a double strand of Skipper Blue, ch 5. 1st row: 1 half d c in 3rd ch from hook and in each of next 2 sts. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: 2 half d c in 3rd st from hook, 1 half d c in each st across, 2 half d c in turning ch, ch 2, turn. 3rd row: 2 half d c in 1st st and 1 half d c in each st across, 2 half d c in turning ch. Ch 3, turn.
Alternate 2nd and 3rd rows, placing work on diagram from time to time, to see if additional increases are necessary. The rows ending with ch 2, form the wrist edge. When wrist measurement is correct, omit increases on thumb side. Continue work, following diagram to show where increases and decreases are necessary. To make thumb, work back and forth on 12 or 13 sts.
Make back of mit the same, but use a single strand of Blue. Work a plaid design on the back of mit with 2 strands of Yellow. This may be done with sl st, or use a needle and make a running stitch or a chain stitch. A ridged effect may be obtained by working the pattern in s c.
Join the front and back together with a row of s c, using Spanish Red. Work a row of s c around wrist.
