Pines dissolves Police Athletic League but will start similar program
PEMBROKE PINES — The city said goodbye to its Police Athletic League, but a new program will be taking its place.
The Pines Athletic Club will operate like the PAL program, offering youth activities such as boxing, tae kwon do and summer camps, but the program’s leadership and organization will be different.
The youth program will now operate under the city’s parks and recreation department rather than as a nonprofit corporation.
“We’re not going to skip a beat — hopefully the kids will say it’s better, more fun,” said Chuck Vones, the parks and recreation director.
The city said the PAL board of directors decided to dissolve the nonprofit last month, saying that it could no longer successfully operate the program.
The city said it expects to break even and possibly make a slight profit by taking over the program. The club will cost the city $79,309 annually. However, program fees, money from concessions and student shows are expected to cover that cost and leave the city with a $9,591 profit.
More than 30 kids participate in the PAL camps and after-school programs, said Vones.
