Paxil (paroxetine) is one of a class of medicines called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). Paxil was first approved in the United States on December 29, 1992, for the treatment of depression. Paroxetine is available as Paxil, Paxil CR, Pexeva, and generic paroxetine hydrochloride. It is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, a large pharmaceutical company with reported earnings of $43.7 billion.
Since September, 2005 information has been coming out that Paxil may cause birth defects, including cardiac (heart), pulmonary (lung), neural-tube defects (brain and spinal cord), craniosynostosis (abnormally shaped skull), infant omphalocele (abdominal wall defects), club foot (one or both feet turn downward and inward), and anal atresia (complete or partial closure of the anus). The FDA issued an alert in July 2006 warning about the increased risk of Neonatal Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN) by mothers taking SSRI antidepressants such as Celexa (citalopram), Fluvoxamine, Lexapro (escitalopram), Paxil (paroxetine), Prozac (fluoxetine, Symbyax (olanzapine and fluoxetine) and Zoloft (sertraline).

Pros: None that I can remember
Cons: Addictive, Really bad insomnia, nausea, shaking uncontrollably
Paxil was probably my worst ever experience with meds, definitely with SSRIs. My doctor prescribed it when I was going through a particulary tough time, which was also no doubt a factor in how bad I felt back then. The main thing with this one was it didn’t real do much in the way of preventing anxiety and panic attacks (Which were the specific things I was taking it for), but it was the first and only med I’ve really become addicted to.
That seems really strange looking back, because I didn’t like how Paxil made me feel, but found myself getting real edgy when I didn’t take it, and even craving it. I’m staying away from this one in future, at the moment I’m taking Celexa on the bad days, and for me at least its considerably better.

Pros: Helped with depression and anxiety at first
Cons: Loss of concentration, loss of emotion, weight loss, headaches, stomach aches, withdrawal, drowsiness, doesn’t work long term
I’ve been on Paxil CR 25mg for 6 months for anxiety and the depression from bipolar (I take something else for the mania). Anyway for the first two months I had my life back and my social anxiety diminished alot. After that things kind of dropped off. I pretty much lost most of my emotion and I often felt like a zombie. I would sporadically have my highs and low-lows. I pretty much quit caring about anything and everything. I became various disorganized and my home became very messy. I pretty much quit cleaning and organizing things including dishes. Before I was a meticulous neat freak that was constantly cleaning and organizing every little thing. I quit bathing, brushing my teeth, and even putting on deodorant. Very unusual for me. My grades also dropped in school, which is upsetting because I had a 4.0 GPA before. I even had to drop some classes for the first time in my college career. I now have to take a nap everyday because I am so tired. Also, I have been losing track of time! I never did these things even when I was depressed with no medications! My social anxiety has come back fully! I also get brain shocks and migraines if I accidentally miss a dose. I would not recommend this medication to anyone based on my experience. I am trying to get off but it has been hell!
